"Cherished Cats and Childhood Capers" by Becky Corwin-Adams is a wonderful memoir, warm, nostalgic and very pleasant to read.Born in Defiance, Ohio in the late 1950s and raised throughout the 1960s the author takes us to a time where life seemed simpler and easier. Childhood pleasures were not electronically manufactured, phone lines were shared, pets and animals provided entertainment and all of this was enough and led to a childhood that the author seems to have enjoyed. The book is a great wal [...]
I received this book to give an honest review. You know this is normally not my type of book to read but I am so glad I was given a copy to read. I love reading about people's life. And within this story even though I was not raised or born in the 60's there are some things that I remember I had growing up in the 90's. For one there is a part within the story that the author and her sister would hold a contest for the person who peeled the biggest piece of elemer's glue off their hand. That is so [...]
Moving with the author from birth until she goes to college we meet the family and friends, pets and pest that shared her life for the first few years. From a party line as a telephone line to red rovers we smile and think back to our own childhoods. The narrator does an excellant job in bringing the authors passion for life to the fore. Again the reader discovers the authors passion for life, love and the animals that have and are sharing her life!Perfect for animal lovers I can definately reco [...]
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about life in the sixties in a small American town. The book is well written and paints a colourful picture of the author's childhood. I downloaded it expecting to read a book primarily about cats and although I was disappointed that more mention was not made of Becky's cats, I nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed this good read. It was well worth it and I'm looking forward to reading more of Becky's books.
I thoroughly enjoyed and related to the author's experiences growing up in the 1960's (although I lived in Washington not Ohio). The writing was honest and to the point. A few of her stories could have been my own - playing with neighborhood kids till dusk, family trips by car, loads of animals and a fascination with Barbi. Oh, and my favorite teacher was Miss Clancy in fourth grade! It was such fun to recount those precious memories. Thank you Becky.
This is a collection of memories from the author. Starting from childhood through the teenage years. We flash back to simpler times and happy memories. I only with the stories flowed together a little better. Some are abruptly thrown in. Overall it's a quick read and gives the reader a great look into the authors life. WaAR
Wonderful, a lovely nostalgic read. What a wonderful book. This brought back so many memories, many of them similar to my own experiences as a child. I loved how the author wrote about their family get-togethers, where they put on a spread and all made their own entertainment-just like my family-we used to have 'musical evenings' at each other's houses, around the piano, and it's sad that people don't tend to do this sort of thing nowadays; spend time with each other and do crafts with there bein [...]
"Cherished Cats and Childhood Capers" is an entertaining memoir about author Becky Corwin-Adams's young years in a small midwestern town. The book is chock-full of lively stories and vivid descriptions of life in the 60s and 70s, all colored by the author's love of pets and emphasis on family values. I enjoyed reading about the author's various escapades; this memoir provides a snapshot of growing up in a simpler time. My favorite books about history are ones told from the point of view of peopl [...]
I listened to this as an audiobook but found myself stopping doing other things often just to focus on the capers and situations being described. It was literally laugh out loud funny. The only thing I may have done differently would have been to use a female narrator. The gentleman did a wonderful job, but it is a tale told through a young girls eyes. The setting is Ohio, and I grew up in Wisconsin. I could relate to SO MUCH in this memoir. From playing outside until after dark, to family road tri [...]
A fun read, reminiscing about days gone by and animals long gone.John David does a fine job narrating but I would have expected a woman to read a womans memories.I was given this book for an honest review.
If you enjoy sitting on a porch swapping childhood stories, you’ll enjoy reading this book.
